Indoor Mosquito Spray: Where and How to Use It

A practical guide to indoor mosquito spray in Egypt: where mosquitoes enter, which rooms to treat, how much to use, and how to apply it safely.

What indoor mosquito spray is for

An indoor mosquito spray is a ready-to-use aerosol applied to surfaces, corners and hiding places inside a building. It is a response and surface-treatment tool, not a room fragrance: the spray deposits a small amount of product where mosquitoes land, rest or enter, and it works when the room is cleared and then ventilated. It is the fastest way to deal with mosquitoes that are already inside a room; it is not the best way to protect a room every night.

That distinction matters in Egypt, where mosquito pressure runs for most of the year. In Cairo apartments, Alexandria flats and Delta homes, it is common to need treatment well into October, and a single spray rarely holds a room for more than a few days. A spray used correctly handles the insects present at the time of treatment. A liquid vaporizer handles the ones that arrive later. Most Egyptian homes need both, in different roles.

Where mosquitoes enter and hide indoors

Spraying the middle of a room wastes product. Mosquitoes use edges, dark corners and entry points, so treatment should follow those routes.

AreaWhy mosquitoes use itTreatment approach
Doors, windows and balconiesMain entry points; gaps under doors and unscreened windowsSpray the frame and adjacent wall; fix seals and screens
Bedroom corners and behind curtainsDark, undisturbed resting sites near peopleLight surface spray on corners and the lower wall
Under furniture and behind wardrobesHumid, dark and rarely cleanedSpray the gap and the wall behind, away from clothing
Bathroom and floor drainsWater and humidity; a route from outsideSpray the drain surround, not the water itself
Kitchen and food storageWarmth and water, but food safety limits applyDo not spray food-contact surfaces; use vaporizers or bait instead

Choose the right product for the room

Not every room should be treated with the same format. The table below matches the product to the use case.

Room or useBest formatWhy
Bedroom, overnight protectionLiquid vaporizer with 45 ml refillContinuous, silent protection while people sleep
Living room, evening useVaporizer, plus spray for a sightingContinuous protection with a fast response option
Kitchen and dining areaVaporizer placed away from food; no spray on surfacesFood safety limits direct spray application
Bathroom and drains45 ml aerosol sprayTargeted treatment of damp corners and drain surrounds
Children's room or elderly roomVaporizer placed out of reach; spray only when the room is emptyVulnerable occupants need continuous, low-exposure protection
Storage room and garageAerosol spray, plus source removalOccasional treatment of corners and entry points

The mosquito repellent spray is the 45 ml aerosol used for targeted indoor treatment; the mosquito liquid refill is the consumable for continuous vaporizer protection. The liquid versus spray comparison explains the cost and use-case difference in more detail.

How to apply indoor spray correctly

The label is the authority for dose, distance and re-entry time. The sequence below is the standard professional routine.

  1. Clear the room: remove or cover food, drinking water, utensils, pet bowls and children's toys.
  2. Close windows and doors: treat the room as an enclosed space, but keep the room empty during application.
  3. Shake the can and hold it upright: keep the nozzle about 30 cm from the surface and use short passes.
  4. Treat edges, not the centre: door and window frames, skirting boards, corners, behind curtains and under furniture.
  5. Leave the room: keep people and pets out for the period stated on the label, then ventilate thoroughly.
  6. Wipe food-contact surfaces: clean kitchen counters, tables and utensils before use, even if they were covered.
  7. Record the treatment: date, product, areas treated and the person responsible.

Do not spray while people are in the room, do not spray directly on skin, and do not use the can near an open flame. Aerosols are pressurised and flammable.

How much spray and how often

Consumption depends on the treated surface area, not the floor area alone. A practical planning figure for a 45 ml can is 20 to 30 square metres of targeted surface treatment, which covers the edges and hiding places of a typical apartment room.

  • Cairo apartment, 2 to 3 rooms: one can per month for targeted treatment, plus a vaporizer refill for nightly protection.
  • Alexandria villa or large flat: two to three cans per month, depending on the number of entry points and wet areas.
  • Rented flat or guest room: one can per month, used between tenants.
  • Family home: one to two cans per month for edge treatment, adjusted after the first month.

Treating more often than the label allows does not improve control. If mosquitoes return within days, the cause is usually an untreated entry point, standing water or a room that needs continuous vaporizer protection.

Safety rules that are not optional

  • Keep children and pets out of the room during application and until the label's re-entry time has passed.
  • Never spray food, drinking water, plates, cutlery, baby bottles or pet bowls.
  • Do not spray on beds, clothing or upholstery unless the label explicitly allows it.
  • Avoid spraying electrical outlets, switches and appliances.
  • Ventilate after treatment; do not seal the room for hours.
  • Keep the can away from heat, direct sunlight and flames.
  • Keep MSDS and the label for any product used in a home or rental property.

When to switch from spray to a vaporizer

Spray is the right tool when mosquitoes are already inside and need immediate removal. A vaporizer is the right tool when the goal is to stop bites through the night, every night. Signs that a room needs continuous protection rather than repeated spraying:

  • Mosquitoes appear again within one or two days of treatment.
  • The room is occupied overnight and has an open window or balcony.
  • The building is near gardens, canals or construction sites.
  • Guests or family members are being bitten while sleeping.

For a family home with several bedrooms, the per-room liquid calculation shows how many refills to keep; the wholesale buyer terms cover carton quantities for retailers and small distributors in Egyptian governorates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before a room can be used after spraying?

Follow the re-entry time on the label, then ventilate thoroughly. As a general practice, keep people and pets out until the room has been aired and any food-contact surfaces have been wiped.

Can indoor mosquito spray be used in a bedroom every day?

No. Daily spraying is unnecessary and increases exposure. Use a vaporizer for nightly protection and reserve the spray for sightings or targeted edge treatment.

Does indoor spray kill mosquito eggs or larvae?

No. It acts on adult mosquitoes that contact the treated surface or spray cloud. Remove standing water to stop larvae developing.

Is indoor mosquito spray safe around food?

Only if used according to its label and never on food-contact surfaces or open food. In kitchens, prefer a vaporizer placed away from food or a licensed pest control service.
